The nipa palm is a symbol of Southern Vietnam. The nipa tree was an important part of the lives of the people here. Nipa's leaves are used in roofing, nipa's fruits are used in making tasty drinks, tree roots reduce landslide risk. Under the nipa's groves is also the habitat of many aquatic species, providing food and a livelihood for the people here.
Urbanization is increasing rapidly, and the area around Nipa palm has also gradually recovered. With low economic efficiency from the sale of leaves and fruits from nipa palm, the people broke down the traditional nipa palm fields. Converted to other, more valuable crops or used land to build houses.
Science proves that if cared for properly after harvesting fruits, the nipa palm trees can continue to produce honey (such as the palmyra palm's honey). Nipa palm honey can be processed into many attractive products such as concentrated honey, sugar, mussels, wine, etc., with an economic value 100 times higher than the harvesting of leaves and fruits.
Sustainable exploitation: In the mangrove area of Can Gio district (the biosphere reserve area of the world), farmers have successfully exploited Nipa palm's honey. After harvesting the fruits, the branch of the Nipapalm tree continues to produce honey. One branch of the Nipapalm tree can produce 1 liter of honey per day and continue for 30 days. Nipa palm trees can be exploited continuously for more than 50 years.
Livelihood stabilization: Each 10 hectares needs 38 workers. 30 people harvest honey, 5 people care for the trees, 2 people deliver, and 1 person manages. Sugar and honey production is regularly over 20 tons per hectare per year.
After harvesting, the nipa's honey is transported to a factory that was certified to ISO 22000 and HACCP standards to be processed into nipa syrup and nipa sugar with modern technology. Nipa syrup and nipa sugar are natural dietary sugars with a low glycemic index and contain many mineral salts suitable for all subjects, especially people with type 2 diabetes, vegetarians, and dieters.
